A beautifully engraved map of Cumberland by the renowned Willem Blaeu. It features a great deal of detail and yet manages not to feel ‘heavy’ as did earlier Dutch engraving. The title is set in a very attractive cartouche lower right which features and agricultural scene in the background. Along with that containing the scale of miles, both are in lovely early wash colour. Across the top of the map are the Royal Coat of Arms and others. The map appeared first in edition of the ‘Atlas Novus’ volume of England and Wales from 1645. This example with large margins and with German text on the reverse is undoubtedly from the ‘Atlas Major’ edition published in 1666. Koeman Bl 61; Van der Krogt, P. (Atlantes) 5385:2.
