Krempe is a town situated to the north west of Hamburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It illustrates the walled in the town with its prominent church and is found in the ‘Civitates Orbis Terrarum’ which was compiled by George Braun (1541-1622) the Canon of Cologne Cathedral. It is accompanied by another of Rendsburg on the River Elder, also in Schleswig-Holstein. Braun produced a total of over 500 city views and maps published in six parts between 1572 and 1617. Its prominence rose on construction of the Kiel Canal in 1895, on which it sits. Most of the engraving was the work of Simon Novellanus and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590), many after drawings by George Hoefnagel. It was first published in the fourth volume in 1588 with Latin text, as here. Koeman II B & H 4 no. 35.
