This map was first published in 1863 by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the ‘New General Atlas’. There is evidence to suggest that Mitchell wasn’t in fact either a cartographer or engraver, his role is more that of an editor. The chief cartographer and engraver of Mitchell’s publications is James H Young. This one is by W. H. Gamble. This attractive map with ornate border features the State of Virginia and the new State of West Virginia born out of the divisions caused by the Civil War. It had only been created on the 20 June 1863. This second state is identified by the addition of the railway line from Greensboro to Danville in southern Virginia. Baskes 53.
