This is an example of the very rare FIRST STATE of Jan Jansson’s county map of Northumberland. Jansson’s English county maps were first published in the ‘Atlas Novus’ in 1646. This map of Northumberland with German text to the verso was first published in 1644. All so-called pre-issue Jansson county maps are rare and desirable. For further details please see the previous item. A comparison of the two states shows that the title cartouche was entirely re-engraved for the regular edition and placed lower left. In its place are found a series of eight coats of arms. The scale of miles here placed below the title would be given its own cartouche upper right. Koeman (1967-70) II ME 75A no. 549; Van der Krogt (1997-2003) 5390:1.1; Map Collectors Circle ‘Notes and Addenda’ pp. 16-18; Skelton (1970) pp. 225-6.
