Matthaus Seutter (1678-c.1757) was an engraver, globe maker and map publisher in Augsburg where he was born and died. He was apprenticed to Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) and his influences can be clearly seen in his work. Although he became Homann’s main competitor, his work was largely unoriginal. In 1731 though, he was named Imperial Geographer to Karl VI. He married three times and had thirteen children of which four joined the firm. The folio ‘Atlas Geographicus’ was first published in 1720 and henceforth enlarged under the title ‘Atlas Novus’. This is nice large scale map of the region surrounding Strasbourg. It extends from Lichtenau in the north to Benfeldt in the south. It includes portions of Baden and Alsace. Ritter (2001); Tooley’s Dictionary.
