This map comes from the official account of the First Voyage of the Pacific by Captain James Cook published in 1773. For the compilation of this work Hawkesworth received £6,000 from the Admiralty. It is thought that they were named after the sponsors of the voyage, the Royal Society. Cook’s Journal records the name ‘as they lay contiguous to one another’. Shirley G.Hawk 1a.
