The ‘English Moths and Butterflies’ by Benjamin Wilkes (fl.1740-50) includes plates drawn from the work of the great Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-70) and Jacob van Huysum (1687-1740). Wilkes was invited by a friend to a meeting of the Aurelian Society and became a member. He began his own collection of English lepidoptera making sketches of the various stages of metamorphoses. Joseph Dandridge, who had been a patron of Eleazer Albin (1690-1742), encouraged Wilkes to publish his notes. Lisney (1960)185-6; Nissen ZBI (1978) 4410.
