This large-scale plan of London in nine sheets extends from Hampstead and Kilburn in the north west to Hackney in the north east. From Kensington and Chelsea in the south west to the Isle of Dogs and Deptford in the south east. The scale is remarkable with individual buildings shown and many identified. It even records the construction of Charing Cross Station and the Chatham & Dover Railway Bridge into the city and Faringdon. The map underwent seven states, this is an example of the third. Between the years 1856 and 1862 ‘The Weekly Dispatch’ newspaper included in each edition a map of a part of the world. During this period a total of 118 maps were issued. This map was first published 1861-62. The engravers varied but included John Dower and Edward Weller. In 1863 ‘The Dispatch Atlas’ was published which contained a series of English county maps. The two were combined in 1865 as ‘Cassell’s Complete Atlas’. Beresiner (1983) pp. 85-7; refer Carroll (1996) no. 120; Hyde (1975) 73.3; https://london1868.com/.
