This beautifully engraved sea chart was undoubtedly issued to accompany the first main edition of Jacques Nicolas Bellin’s (1703-72) ‘Hydrographie Francoise’. He was Hydrographer in the French Dépôt de la Marine. With access to the latest navigational reports, he produced a great many maps and charts of excellent quality. This example focuses on the west coast of South Africa and extends north to latitude 18 degrees south and around the Cape of Good Hope to Still Bay. With a fine profile of Table Mountain upper right and a very ornate title cartouche. Sanderson (1971) 210 no. 107; refer Shirley (2004) M.Bell 2a; Tooley (1969) p. 23.
