This is the extremely rare Dutch edition of Nicolas Bellin’s important map of Australia. The Abbe Prevost’s (1697-1763) “Histoire Generale des Voyages” was first published in Paris 1745-70. The map is one of the very few maps to focus on the Australian continent. It represents up to date French cartography of the day linking as it does the east coast of Australia to new Guinea. This extends south as would be expected at the time to include Tasmania. Western Australia is well developed although there is a reference to the fictitious voyage of Duquesne in 1687. New Zealand is depicted in the lower right according to the work of Tasman. Brunet IV: 868; refer Clancy p. 93; Sabin 65402; refer Tooley (Australia) 156.
