THE ONLY KNOWN EXAMPLE OF THE UNRECORDED FIRST MAP OF THE BRITISH ISLES BY JAILLOT. Alexis Hubert Jaillot (1628-88) was the leading French cartographer of the late seventeenth century. Born in the Franche-Comte he made his way to Paris with his brother Simon, an ivory carver, in 1657. In 1664 he married the daughter of the map publisher Nicolas Berey with whom he had seven children. Following Berey’s death in 1668 the two bought his father’s stock and began trading. At first he signed “H Jalliot” as here which was used only on his very first maps. Indeed the following year he issued another map of the British Isles dated 1669 using the more usual spelling of his name ‘Jaillot’.
