This map first appeared in John Hawkesworth’s (1715-73) official account of the first circumnavigation of Captain James Cook published in 1773. This issue is from the first French edition published the following year. It depicts the route of Cook past New Guinea and also shows those of Captain Carteret and William Dampier in 1699.
