An excellent large chart of the North Pacific engraved by P. F. Tardieu which shows the route of La Perouse’s voyage of 1785-88 in the ships Boussole and Astrolabe. The route takes in Canton, Taiwan (Formosa), Korea, Hawaii, the north west coast of America and California. Jean-Francois de Galoup, Comte de La Perouse led a French scientific expedition to the Pacific. He was selected to extend the survey work of Captain James Cook’s exploration into the western Pacific. Unfortunately for us La Perouse was last seen in Botany Bay, Australia in the spring of 1788. Fortunately though he was meticulous in sending copies of his logs and surveying back home as he travelled. The expedition was never heard from again. It was not until 1827 that their fate was uncovered.
