This map centres on the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska and extends along the coast to Norton Sound. The track of Captain James Cook’s voyage in the region in 1778 and 1779. This was part of Cook’s Third Voyage and just before his ill-fated death in Hawaii in 1779. The map is from the ‘Atlas Encyclopedique’. Engraved by Gaspard Andre is includes an attractive compass rose. Rigobert Bonne (1727-95 ) was one of the most important French cartographers of the late eighteenth century. He succeeded Jacques Bellin in 1773 as Royal Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. With his official capacity Bonne was able to compile some of the more detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne’s earlier work bore the decorative style common of the period, with many similarities to Bellin. His later work became more technically orientated lacking in any ornamentation. Falk 1788-2; Phillips, P.L. (Atlases) 666.
