A detailed chart recording the discoveries of Captain James Cook in Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet in Alaska. It includes the track undertaken along with depth soundings. An inset plan lower right features a ‘Plan du Havre de Samganoodha dans l’Isle de Oonalaska. The map is from the ‘Atlas Encyclopedique’. Engraved by Gaspard Andre is includes an attractive compass rose. Rigobert Bonne (1727-95 ) was one of the most important French cartographers of the late eighteenth century. He succeeded Jacques Bellin in 1773 as Royal Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. With his official capacity Bonne was able to compile some of the more detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne’s earlier work bore the decorative style common of the period, with many similarities to Bellin. His later work became more technically orientated lacking in any ornamentation. Phillips, P.L. (Atlases) 666.
