A fine large scale sea chart of the Balearic Islands of Spain showing the nearby coast of the mainland including Catalonia and Valencia and Barbary in Africa. Joseph Roux (1725-93) was a hydrographer, map publisher and manufacturer of navigating instruments from Marseilles. This is the second sheet from his superb rare maritime atlas entitled “Carte de la Mer Mediterranee en Douze Feuilles” consisting of twelve large engraved folding plates of the Mediterranean Sea. Interestingly the manuscripts for sheets 5-12 still survive in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. The work was so highly praised that Lord Nelson carried a copy of the work on board H.M.S. Victory from 1802, that copy is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. The tracks of the ship in 1803 and 1805 are found in it; Nelson famously died at Trafalgar in 1805. The coastline is detailed with depths and anchorage’s. Blackmer 1455; Howse & Sanderson p. 91; Johnson (2004). ‘The modest life and times of Joseph Roux’ pp. 27-37; NMM 267; not in Pastoureau; Phillips 195; Shirley BL M.Roux 2a no. 2; cf Smith (1978) ‘The Artful Roux, Marine Painters of Marseille’ pp. 2-3.
