The first edition third state according to Tooley of Guillaume de L’Isle’s map of the American continent. A surprisingly uncommon map displaying much of de l’Isle’s advanced cartography in North America. The north west coast bears an inlet purportedly discovered by Marint d’Aguilar. With an ornate title cartouche lower left. Tooley mixes up the French plate with those of Covens and Mortier engraved in Amsterdam but this appears to be the third state of the French map as published by Philippe Buache in 1745. Provenance: private French collection. Tooley, R.V. (America) p. 13, no. 5, pl. 1; Wagner, H. (NW) 523.
