‘This is the first printed nautical chart of the east coast by an Englishman, and the first to record soundings.’ It uses Mercator’s projection for the first time. The Chesapeake Bay bears soundings something curiously lacking from his later more detailed chart of the region. York River is seen for the first time on a map. Two Virginia’s are cited, old and new. All reference to the Dutch in New Amsterdam is removed and the River named after its discoverer, Hudson. Burden 267.
DUDLEY, Sir Robert
