In the early 1860’s Alvin Jewitt Johnson took control of the atlas publishers G. Woolworth Colton. His ‘New Illustrated Family Atlas’ brought out a whole new series of maps into the upheaval of the American Civil War raging at the time. This map of the American South West displays the routes of discovery by Fremont in 1842, 1843 and 1844 along with established trading routes and proposed railway lines. Ristow (1985) p. 325.
