This is from an edition of William Camden’s ‘Britannia’ in 1610, first published without maps in 1586. It was the last to be published in his lifetime and first illustrated with county maps in 1607. That edition in Latin has printed text on the verso of the maps. This 1610 edition was the first with English text, but the maps are issued without text on the back making them more desirable. Camden (1551-1623) was an antiquary and historian. An academic by profession he would become the headmaster of Westminster School in 1593. He spent much of his time travelling and collecting material for his highly respected ‘Britannia’ which had been contemplated since at least 1589. This map of Caernarvonshire in north Wales is engraved by William Hole. An example of the second state with the addition of a plate number lower left. Chubb (1927) 18; Evans (1964) MCC no. 13 p. 6; Shirley (2004) T.Camd 1e; Skelton (1970) 6; Taylor (1968) pp. 9- 13.
