The ‘Atlas Anglicanus’ was first issued in parts surviving in just one known example and then as the first edition of the ‘Atlas Anglicanus’ in 1767 re-published in 1777. It was published as the ‘New Medium Atlas’ by Carington Bowles in 1785 bearing different imprints. A unique example survives of the last edition jointly published by Bowles and Carver c.1793. An example of this last state of the map of the county of Surry is offered here and is therefore ONE OF ONLY TWO SURVIVING EXAMPLES. Emanuel Bowen (fl.1714 d.1767) was a very active engraver whose style is often noted by the extensive use of legends. Emanuel died during the issue of the parts and the work was continued by his son Thomas. Hodson 254.
