A detailed very rare sea chart of three key harbours in the western Mediterranean Sea first published in Mount & Page’s ‘English Pilot Part Three’ in 1716. Although unsigned like others by John Gaudy it was engraved by Samuel Parker, this example is from the 1747 edition. Two thirds of the lower portion is devoted to the crucially important harbour of Mahon on the island of Minorca. Captured by the British during the War of Spanish Succession in 1708 its possession was confirmed in the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The harbour is shown in great detail with the nearby towns of ‘St. Phillps Towne’ and ‘Maon’. Upper right is another strategic harbour, that of Malta at Valetta. Upper left is that of Barcelona with a wonderful birds-eye view of the town. This is an example of the second state with the date 1705 erased from the title. NMM 425 no. 145; Shirley ‘Atlases in the BL’ M.M&P 3b no. 11.
