A reduction of the poster by the artist Jules Cheret produced to promote the Moulin Rouge in the same year it opened, 1889. It was included in ‘Les Maitres de l’Affiche’, a work under his direction published between 1895 and 1900 which celebrated the finest posters of the era. It was published by subscription on a monthly basis which included four per issue. One in four lithographs were of Cheret’s own works but others included those of such artists as Mucha, Steinlen, and of course Toulouse-Lautrec. Cheret designed his own blind stamp which is applied to each print. Jules Cheret (1836-1932) is considered the father of poster art and founded his shop in Paris in 1866.
