At the beginning of the eighteenth century Gerard van Keulen set about replacing many of his father’s sea charts. The 1734 edition of the second part of the Zee Fakkel was improved considerably with a large number of entirely new charts. This is one of them and features in great detail the River Mersey and River Dee with the peninsula. The towns of Liverpool and Chester are displayed. An inset map of the Solway Firth is upper right showing Carlisle at the head. Adorned with a fine compass rose and rhumb lines. A truly wonderful example of this map. Koeman (1967-70) IV Keu 71 no. 300.
