This rare map of the British Isles was engraved by David Custodis (fl.1618-44) about whom little is known. The map is derived that of Baptista Deutecum, 1605, with some improvements to Ireland. A simple engraving, it was published in ‘Laurea Austriaca …’, 1627, a history book which included amongst other things a series of battle scenes. Shirley identified its inclusion in other works of this period by E. Kempfer. This example comes from the ‘Theatrum Historiae universalis Catho-Protest’ by Nicolas Helvicus, published in Frankfurt by Johann Gottfried Schönwetter and Matthäus Kempfer in 1644. There is no alteration to the map. Provenance: Gebr. Haas 1992; private English collection. Shirley (1991) 396; Tooley’s Dictionary; USTC 2050247.
