The final edition in Holland of Jodocus Hondius’ ‘Atlas Minor’ had been in 1621. In 1628 his son-in-law Johannes Janssonius (Jansson, 1588-1664) published a further edition with an entirely new set of plates engraved by Abraham Goos and Pieter van den Keere, two of the most accomplished engravers of the day. It too proved to be successful. This map consists of four islands in the British Isles. Like the previous work mentioned it is ultimately derived from the folio map of the same first published by Gerard Mercator in 1595. That of Anglesey appears to have been derived from the Christopher Saxton map from 1579. The Isle of Wight appears to be derived from the Baptista Boazio map of the island from 1591 with the notable alteration to the size of the sandbank off the northeast coast. Guernsey is reasonably accurate and bears a remarkable similarity to the manuscript prepared by Reyner Wolfe c.1565. Indeed, every placename on the manuscript is repeated here with no additional names. That of Jersey is derived from the manuscript by John Norden (British Library Add. MS. 31,853) presented to Queen Elizabeth. There were several editions of the ‘Atlas Minor’ through 1651. This bears Latin text on the verso with which only two editions were published in 1628 and 1634. Koeman Me 194 (21); Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
