This work was first issued in weekly parts beginning according to the Prospectus at the Huntington Library on 31 January 1795. Each part was to contain 64 leaves of text and 1 plate. William Winterbotham (1763-1829) employed John Russell to engrave a number of larger folding maps of the America’s for inclusion. Of particular note is the early plan of the intended new capital Washington. Sabin notes that ‘the directions to the binder calls for a plate of Niagara Falls’ but that as here it is replaced by one of St. Anthony Falls. It also includes a second portrait of Washington not called for by the list of contents, both are engraved by Grainger. Another similar example was sold at Swann Galleries in October 2002. An uncommon work in fine condition. Provenance: Texan collection in the 1990’s. Baynton-Williams ‘Plans of Washington DC no. 14; ESTC T131074; Howes W571; Phillips Maps p. 1005; Ristow ‘American Maps’ p. 153; Sabin 104832; Shirley ‘Atlas in the BL’ G.Wint 1a.
