A magnificent detailed chart of the region between Patna displayed upper left and the Bengal Provinces including the city of Dacca. First published by Andrew Dury in 1776 this example was included in Laurie and Whittle’s ‘New Universal Atlas’ and is dated 1794. Dury (fl.1742-78) is an under recognised publisher, printer, engraver, mapseller and surveyor. He produced many detailed and significant maps of various parts of the world. Sayer was a major publisher and map and print seller who acquired the business of Thomas Jefferys. He published many of Thomas Kitchin’s works also. He would later go into partnership with John Bennett. The original survey work was carried out by the great surveyor of India Major James Rennell.
