An uncommon map of South America by Claude Barthélemy Morisot (1592-1661), a leading intellectual of his day. It is from his ‘Orbis Maritimi’, the first comprehensive book on naval history. Amongst the maps engraved to illustrate it was this attractive one set on a page of text. map outlines major topographical features including the large mythical lake named ‘Guiana’. I fine attractive title cartouche is lower left. There were further editions of the book in 1645 and 1648, but neither appear to contain these plates which were not used again. Borba de Moraes (1958) vol. 2, pp. 87-8; refer Burden (1996) 264; ‘The A. E. Nordenskiöld Collection’ (1979) no. 152/ Sabin (1868) no. 50723.
