The prints published by H. Schile during the 1870s were according to Peters “undoubtedly American in spirit”. ‘Across the Continent’ is described by him as being “the best of the group, reproduced in colour to show how far they [the publishers] could go”. As often the case with Schile prints it is printed on black paper. This particular print is evocative of the great western migration happening at the time. It depicts the Central Pacific Railroad as it passes the Humboldt River, Nevada. Provenance: private English collection. Peters, Harry T. ‘America on Stone’ pp. 358-9.
