A highly attractive chart of the Azores derived from a map of Tercera by Luis Teixeira published in 1582 and a later manuscript map of the group of islands. Teixeira later devoted an atlas to these islands. This map by Ortelius first appeared in the ‘Theatrum’ in 1584, this example with Latin text to the verso was issued in 1592. With two ornate title cartouches and a title banner at top center. The sea is fully engraved in stipple and features a sea monster and sailing ships. French text on verso published circa 1598. Meurer pp. 253-4; Van den Broecke, M. 24.
