The original of this map was engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar. It is a birds-eye view of the town with ships in the harbour. The Hollar engraving was a frontispiece to “A True Narrative of the most Observable Passages in and at the late Siege of Plymouth”, 1644. This appears to be most likely an eighteenth century copy of the plan. Stuart records the survival of three such manuscripts dating from a later period. It is possible that they were made to mark the centenary of the conflict. There are a number of subtle spelling differences to be noted such as “Boswell” for “Holywell” and “Inswell” in the west.
