An eighteenth century hand coloured manuscript estate map of the Manor of Trevalga in North Cornwall. With magnificent detail of the town of Trevalga each building clearly identified. A sumptuous large ornate compass rose at the bottom of the map. It is framed in red outline which enables one to conclude that the entire original map is present with nothing missing despite its curious ‘L’ shape. Each parcel of land is identified and the Bristol Channel is clearly named. It is adorned with three ships and one row boat complete with four rowers and a figure at the rudder. Long Island, Short Island and Grower Rock are all identified. Richard Martyn may well be related to Thomas Martyn, surveyor, mathematics teacher and miner from Cornwall who was the author of a magnificent nine-sheet map of the county in c.1748. Richard Martyn is listed in Eden ‘Dictionary of Land Surveyors’ p. 175.
