An extremely rare map of East Kent or the Diocese of Canterbury extending westwards to Maidstone. ONLY TWO EXAMPLES COULD BE TRACED in British Institutions, these being at the British Library and Lambeth Palace. It was published by a Thomas Wells in 1782. We have been unable to identify him. The margins contain ‘An alphabetical table of all the Rectories, Vicarages, Curacies, Chapels and Desolate Churches in the Diocese of Canterbury…’ with index to their location on the map and yearly value to the exchequer. A grid placed on the map aids in finding them. An Explanation lower right identifies Deanery Towns, rectories etc. including those exempt and ‘desolate’. Tooley Dictionary (1999-2004).
