This fine large scale map of the American continent was the work of the geographer John Gibson. It was published by Robert Sayer who later included it in examples of the ‘New General Atlas’ first published in 1773, this example is from an edition dated 1780. The lower left corner bears a large inset of Hudson Bay and Baffin Bay area. The table of colonial possessions and independent states at left details the Treat of Paris signed 10 February 1763. This map was published before the improved knowledge of the north-west coast and displays the River of the West with a reference to its north of the Sea of the West. Phillips (1901) p. 111; Phillips (1909-) 668; Shirley (2004) T.Say 2a nos. 30-31; Stevens & Tree (1967) 3(c).
