The first state of Edward Wells’ map of south eastern Europe and the Ukraine engraved by Benjamin Cole. With an ornate title cartouche surmounted by the Royal Coat of Arms. Wells (1667-1727) was a mathematician and geographer. This map is from the ‘New Sett of Mapps’ first published in 1700. All the maps are dedicated to the young Duke of Gloucester who had always been sickly and died in July 1700. Despite being published for another 40 years this example appears to be a first state. No example of the first edition examined by the author bears any plate numbers, that of 1701 in the British Library does. Shirley (BL) T.Well 1a no. 23
