This large extremely attractive map of England and Wales is surrounded by letterpress tables for each county, Ireland and Scotland. These include details of their size, population and triangular distance tables. Two further columns detail the distance from London and the town’s population. Upper centre is a list of the ‘Canals of England’. Further tables below feature ‘Steam Navigation. Distances by Steamers’ and ‘Railways’. The latter lists the railways in alphabetical order along with their distances and estimated expense to construct. The most expensive being the London to Birmingham at £5,000,000. The map itself is displays the canals but interestingly focuses on the railroads. These are coloured in red with projected ones shown in blue. The map does not appear in the British Library’s online catalogue. The whole is surrounded by an ornate border. A very attractive item. Provenance: private collection of Rodney Shirley.
