A magnificent large four-sheet map of the West Indies. The mantle of charting the American coastline so effectively carried by the British ended with the Revolutionary War. Taken up by the likes of Matthew Clark and John Norman their work extended outside American waters, particularly to the Caribbean. This chart was issued prior to the atlas and although first dated “Decr. 28 1789” was most likely first published in 1790 when a newspaper advertisement first offered it for sale. It is certified by Osgood Carleton on the title. The map takes in the whole of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. This is an example of the second state with “J” Norman altered to “W”. Wheat & Brun #688 2nd state; Guthorn “Eighteenth Century Shore and Harbour Charts Printed in America”, The Map Collector 12 pp. 24-31; Guthorn, United States coastal charts 1783-1861, p. 7-8.
