An UNRECORDED state. Rodney Shirley in his ‘Printed Maps of the British Isles 1650-1750’ cited two states of this map and only the one known example surviving, in its presumed second state, at the University Library, Leiden. Although that example is dated 1731 the engraver Sutton Nicholls was active at an earlier date and Shirley records he died somewhere between 1721 and 1731. This is a derivative of Morden and Paske’s exceedingly rare map of c.1690. The main roads are depicted by broad double-lines and the lesser roads in a single line. Mileage’s are marked too. Major harbours are marked by anchors. ‘The two cartouches are also similar to the earlier map, although on the left, the William and Mary coat of arms, now obsolete, has been replaced by a globe, and on the right by a figure of Mercury. A graticule of lines of latitude and longitude is placed along the central map, not present in the Morden-Paske original’ (Shirley). Like the Leiden example ours, dated 1740, bears side panels of alphabetical tables and coats of arms of 90 shire and towns. Interestingly lower right is a key to the colours on the arms, each being represented by a different style of engraving. Refer Shirley Overton 8.
