From the ‘Atlas Maritimus & Commercialis’ usually attributed to the great Astronomer Royal Halley. Daniel Defoe is known to have contributed part of the text at least. The author of the sailing directions and associated text is Nathanial Cutler who is also often named. Proposals for the atlas were announced in 1719 and its intention was an improvement on Mercator’s projection using a globular one. This double sheet chart of the Channel is very appealing.
