This map engraved by John Gibson was published in the ‘London Magazine’ and accompanied an extract from George Washington’s report on his mission to Western Pennsylvania on behalf of Virginia’s Governor Robert Dinwiddie. It was made in reply to the increasing activity of the French in the region. The message sent to be delivered by the 21 year old George Washington was for the French to leave the area. The French naturally refused and Washington made a perilous journey back to Williamsburg during the winter of 1753-4. The Journal was put together in a great hurry and lacked any map. A London edition published later in 1754 was to include a map produced by Thomas Jeffery’s. The source of the cartography is George Washington himself as a number of surviving manuscripts attest. A map of great importance in American history. Cumming, W.P. (Colonial) 60; Jolly, D.C. LOND 85; Sellers & Van Ee 1426.
