A magnificent detailed chart of the region between Delhi displayed upper left and the Bengal Provinces. First published by Andrew Dury in 1777 this example was included in Robert Sayer’s ‘General Atlas’ and is dated 1786. Dury (fl.1742-78) is an under recognised publisher, printer, engraver, mapseller and surveyor. He produced many detailed and significant maps of various parts of the world. Sayer was a major publisher and map and print seller who acquired the business of Thomas Jefferys. He published many of Thomas Kitchin’s works also. He would later go into partnership with John Bennett. The original survey work was carried out by the great surveyor of India Major James Rennell. Not listed in Shirley’s Atlases in the British Library although they do possess a loose example. Gole no. 79.
