This is the first state of John & Carington Bowles’ SEPARATELY PUBLISHED map of New England and is very rare. It ultimately derived from the William Douglass map of the same area. It is more directly drawn from the four-sheet Jeffery’s-Green map of 1755. This map has historically been given the date of 1765 for the first issue however the partnership of John and Carington Bowles ended in 1763 when Carington ((1724-93) acquired the stock of his uncle Thomas Bowles II (c.1695-1767).
