Emanuel Bowen (c.1683-1767) was one of the most important map sellers and engravers of the eighteenth century. He began his career as an engraver and according to Tooley one of his earliest works is a map of Asia dated 1714. This map of the Diocese of Canterbury is one of his early works. In 1721 a John Lewis published a map of the Diocese from which this map is derived; only one example appears to survive in Lambeth Palace. Indeed a manuscript notation in the lower right margin refers to it. The map identifies Deanery towns, Rectories and Curacies with individual symbols. The whole map is covered by a numbered and lettered grid. It is dedicated to the ‘most Reverend Father in God, William by divine providence Lord Arch-Bishop of Canterbury, this map of his Grace’s Diocesse is humbly dedicated by his unworthy clerk, I.L. [John Lewis]’. The map was offered for sale by R. Wilkin who is not listed in Tooley (1999-2004). ONLY ONE EXAMPLE COULD BE TRACED in British Institutions at the British Library Maps CC.5.a.348.
