This is the first printed map of the colonies of Connecticut and Rhode Island. The great Moses Park map was not printed until 1766. It displays in some detail the roads, rivers and townships at the time. Interestingly the road does not extend to Providence. Engraved by Thomas Kitchin for the April 1758 issue of the ‘London Magazine’ it probably used the Survey of Gardner and Kellock (1737). It is embellished with ornate title cartouche lower right and nearby are the compass rose and scale of miles. The latter tells us that the map is drawn to a scale of about 16 inches to the mile. Cumming Colonial Mapping p.26; Jolly, D.C. (Brit Per) LOND-135; McCorkle, B.B. (New England) C758.1; Sellers & Van Ee #805; Thompson, E. #14.
