A beautiful watercolour estate plan on vellum of Carpenters Park, now known as Carpenders Park in Watford just south west of Bushey. The estate is depicted on Oxey (Oxhey) Lane which still exists today although the fields are all built over now. Carpenders Park Railway Station would be approximately where the ‘Lime-kill’ is marked, clearly near a ready supply of chalk as the neighbouring field and wood are called Chalk-dale. Lower right is a table of sizes for the numbered fields, and lower left is the scale of ‘Gunter’s Chains’. A Gunter’s Chain or ‘survey’ chain was a standard form of measurement in England from the seventeenth century and is named after Edmund Gunter. A faint compass rose is positioned upper left. A fine example of the art with ornate gilt title upper right. The whole is signed by the surveyor, John Booth, lower left. Booth is recorded as being born circa 1688 at Gildersome, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He died 1733 at Cheshunt, Herts.
