This important map is the first printed to detail the interior of Australia and features the region surrounding the newly founded colony of Sydney. The job of surveying the harbour was left to the second in command John Hunter. A printed version was published just one year later in Governor Arthur Phillip’s account of the colony. This map records his extended work into the interior of the continent. Whilst harvesting Norfolk Pine on Norfolk Island their vessel the ‘Sirius’ was shipwrecked offshore. He returned to Britain to face court martial and whilst there published ‘An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson & Norfolk Island’ in January 1793. This map was to accompany it. Hunter’s map was drawn by William Dawes (1762-1836) which details the condition of the soil and its suitability for agriculture. Dawes was on the First Fleet in 1788 with the ‘Sirius’ and was one of the principal surveyor’s of the colony.
