A fascinating broadside on the execution of Louis XVI of France. The aquatint image above displays a blindfolded Fortune with winged feet emerging from the clouds decorated with three fleur-de-lis pushing a wheel to the summit of the earth. The lower left of the wheel bears a crown which is being rotated to indicate ascendancy. At the top are two ribbons inscribed ‘Tallien’ and ‘Merlin’ about to lose their position. To the right descending is a red hat. Further round and about reach the bottom are further ribbons inscribed ‘Collot d’Herbois’ and ‘Barrere’. The list below is in four columns each divided into ‘Names’, ‘Departments’, ‘When arrested’, ‘Fate’.

The next list is entitled ‘A List of those, who, without having Voted for the King’s Murder, have made themselves eminent in the French Revolution, and have been recompensed’, in other words they have been guillotined or in some cases have committed suicide. The following list is of ‘French Republican Generals, who have received a reward for their services, during the French Revolution’. Many were guillotined, the remainder died by suicide or some other means, some were purely arrested. M. Dorothy George, ‘Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum’, VII, 1942.
