FIRST EDITION. Published by John and Charles Walker this fascinating map details the geology throughout England, Wales and part of Scotland. Although on a slightly smaller scale than William Smith’s great map, it is very impressive, and gives the location of mineral and rock deposits. Like Smith’s map strata are represented. The map also bears prominently the nascent railway network coloured in red, each line named and their stages of completeness identified. The canal network is also shown although with less prominence. There day is passing. A large explanation of the colouring upper right differentiates 24 different strata. It is complemented by a further discussion of metallurgical sources. Cross-sections show geological and mineralogical profiles from St. George’s Channel to the German Ocean and from Lands End to the German Ocean. Offshore there are numerous depth soundings recorded. The scale is approximately 9 miles to the inch. Provenance: private English collection. British Library Maps 3.b.21.
