This chart is of the coast of Tioman Island off the east coast of Malaysia not far from Singapore. It has been used for thousands of years by fishermen as an important navigation point and a source of fresh water and wood. Its beaches were depicted in the 1958 movie, “South Pacific”as Bali Hai. In the 1970s, TIME Magazine selected Tioman as one of the world’s most beautiful islands. William Herbert (1718-95) was a publisher and map seller specialising in sea charts. He was a member of the Drapers Company and served with the East India Company. This chart appeared in the 1776 edition of Herbert’s “New Directory for the East Indies”. Shirley Atlases in the BL M.Herb.1b no. 43; Tooley’s Dictionary.
